United Parcel Service offers a great program for UofL and JCC students that allows them to work for the company and get their school paid for while still earning a paycheck. UPS partners with Metro-College and will pay 100% of your tuition fees as long as you get Cs or betters in your classes. With the rising cost of education this sounds like a no brainier!
Simply commit to working through the semester, show up, and get paid! However, just like your mom used to say: Nothing is ever as good as it sounds.
To be able to use this program you have to work within the air district as a package handler at night. The hours suck. The work sucks. Most of the people suck.
The employees truly have the “union mentality” which makes some of them impossible to work with. The work is strenuous which can be hard to grow used to if you have never pushed your body. Since it is a warehouse or outside job, depending on your position, it is going to be freezing in the winter and scorching in the summer.
You will NEVER get used to the night shift schedule. I have worked it for four years and still struggle on it. You are forced to prioritize family gatherings, social events, appointments, and relationships against your sleep.
That is not even mentioning school! The whole reason most people take this job and go through the program is to get free college education. Now you have to fit classes and studying into your already impossible schedule.
If you get a C or D in class you have to pay it back, which defeats the purpose of going through with the program. But if you call into work contently you risk loosing your job and forfeiting the program anyways. You have to learn to balance your time and prioritize like a pro.
I have spent many nights inside of Worldport as an employee. And sacrificed so much “free” time I could be enjoying to sleep. Many friends were lost due to my impossible schedule. Memories were missed out on when I had to miss family events. I worked my way into management and am getting ready to graduate from UofL- DEBT FREE!
Even though there may appear to be plenty of downfalls to going through this program it is 100% worth it! Besides, whats four years of a normal sleep cycle compaired to about $50,000 in debt?!
